Get involved

As a member of the IET you have an invaluable opportunity to shape the future of your profession.

Whether you are a student, recently qualified, long-standing or a retired member, the broad range of volunteering opportunities available means that there is an activity to suit all levels of skills and experience and the commitment from you can be as little or as much as you are prepared and able to give.

You can get involved by:

  • Helping to organise meetings and events for your Local or chosen Technical and Professional Network
  • Submitting research papers to the IET journals
  • Helping to author new publications
  • Reviewing papers in your area of expertise
  • Speaking at a Local Network meeting
  • Taking on the role of a professional review interviewer
  • Becoming an IET mentor
  • Contributing to government consultations
  • Assisting in assessments for awarding qualifications
  • Promoting IET activities in schools, colleges, universities and in places of employment.

Why get involved?

By volunteering your valuable time and applying your knowledge and expertise to IET activities, you are providing immense benefit to others.  It will give you great personal satisfaction whilst being an enjoyable and rewarding experience which enhances both your professional and personal development.

It doesn't matter why you volunteer, but you can be sure that your time will make a difference.

"For me, being an Institution member is about giving back to other people. I have been active in the Institution as a Career Advisor, Mentor and Interviewer for Chartered Engineer status and am now Chairman of the IET Scottish Forum"

Volunteer activities

In April 2008 we held the Volunteers Conference Weekend at Savoy Place in London. Volunteers from across the organisation attended this annual conference in order to be involved in the shaping of a truly global Institution through our Local Networks and our Technical and Professional Networks.
